【Abstract】 The problem of damage stability and the flooding process is always the focus on the research of the navigation safety, especially when it`s damaged in the beam waves. It will suffer danger or capsize.A numerical method for simulating the roll motion of damaged ships in time domain in beam regular waves is developed. This method based on the equations of roll motion of the ship. In this method, the well-established classical hydrodynamic formulae are applied to evalua12CrMo9-10te the quantity of the flooding water and its resultant rolling moment. The water flooded into the damaged compartment is assumed to settle down instantaneously with a flat surface paralleled to the mean sea level, and the hydrostatic pressure of the incident wave is taken into account. Then effects on the course of flooding and history of roll motion due to variations of the frequency and height of the incident waves, the height of the opening and the type of damaged compartments are investigated. Results of the numerical simulations on a ro-ro passenger ship in beam waves as well as in calm water are presented.Of all the methods of calculating the damage stability, probabilistic damage stability method is being well recognized. It takes the randomness of ship`s accident into account, makes a summary of the history information, and gradually forms a new method to check the damage stability and being implemented. This paper also presents the development and the principle of the probabilistic method, and makes a preliminary study of the newest criterion on subdivision and damage stability. Additionally, some arrangement plans are proposed to study the effect of parameters on the attained subdivision index“A”, which can give guidance to the subdivision of the ship before built12CrMo9-10
